About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Flying from the states to Shanghai. Layover for 16 hours at a hotel that is 1 mile from the airport.

Then off to Thailand before Returning to Shanghai two weeks later. We would like to stay in Shanghai for 70 hours before we catch our return flight back to the states. So do we need a visa or is a transit permit good enough?

As your first transit is under 24hrs you only need direct transit service. For your second visit you'll need a 72hr free transit but 70hrs is cutting it close so make sure you get to airport 3-5hrs early and be prepared if flight is delayed/cancelled.
