About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hi, I am taking a ferry from tokyo to shanghai, then a train to hong kong.

Do I need a chinese mainland visa even though I don't need one for hong kong (I'm from the US), for the train ride from shanghai?

Alex, if you total layover time in Mainland PRC is less than 24 hours, you don’t need it. If not, you should apply for one ahead of your journey.
