family reunion try to apply temporary residency

Question

I am on q2 visa with Australian passport, planning to stay in china over 12 months to reunite with my dad. Do I need to exit PRC to re-apply q1 to apply for the temporary residence permit?

Jing, you can go to the exit and entry administration of the local PSB and see if you can change this Q2 type into a Q1 without going outside China. If yes, it will be wonderful. If no, you have to exit and apply for a Q1.
