Flying from Hong Kong to Shanghai for 3 days on US Passport

I will be in Hong Kong from New York for 1 week and would like to go to Shanghai for 3 days in middle of the week. So technically not a transit, am I eligible for the visa free transit?? US passport holder and plan to buy round trip HK Shanghai while in Hong Kong
