About:Shanghai Pudong Airport

I have a 12 hour layover in shanghai, I'm a U.S. citizen traveling from Bangkok to NYC.

do I need a visa to exit the airport in China and go see the town or do I qualify for the 72 hours visa free transfer? And also if I qualify any recommendations in what to do in those 12 hours?

1. You don't need to have a visa because of the stopover is no more than 24 hours. But if you wanna go out of the airport and tour around downtown area, you need to apply for a Stay Permit at the inspection counter.
2. You can make full use of these 12 hours to visit Nanjing Road, Bund Area and Garden Bridge. Nanjing Road is the heaven of shopping. And you can taste many distinctive local foods there. In order to save time, you can take Maglev Train from PVG, get off at Longyang Road Station. Then take direct subway line 2 to the following popular scenic areas. Have fun!
