Family visa to work Z type

If someone on a family entry permit (2 year expiration) wants to switch to a work Z type do they have to leave the country or can all the processing be done inside China? The issue here isn't length of time it takes to process the Z type, but simply does one need to exit PRC (to HK for example) or not?

Nick, as far as I know, some people have succeeded in changing the family type entry permit into a work Z type inside PRC. You can follow their experiences. First get a work permit and letter from a duly authorized unit. Then go to the local exit and entry adminsitration office to change the S type to a Z type. And then, renew your residence permit.
