About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Am I eligible for 72 hour visa free transit if my Chinese Z-class expired?

I'm Canadian, my Chinese worker's contract ends Sept 20th, 2015.
I have a flight from Harbin to Shanghai Sept 21st, 2015.
I will book another flight from Shanghai to Hong Kong (no entry permit required) on September 21st, 2015.

Am I eligible for 72 hour free transit?

Kyle, to use the free transit policy, you have to travel from country A to country B via China. So I don't think you are eligible for the 72-hour transit permit waiver because there is no country A in your route.

By the way, as your work contract ends on Sept 20th, what about your residence permit? If it also expires on that day, you can change the Z type to a tourist L type at the exit and entry administration office in advance so that you can stay for one day more legally.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've booked a flight out of Mainland China into Hong Kong arriving on the 20th.

As for changing the Z to an L, I simply have no faith that whomever I ask to perform this task will understand/execute the procedure without causing further trouble.

I've been misinformed by several "officials" and would rather leave as quickly as possible.

Best,
