need separate visa to stay overnight at kunming(indian citizen)

Question

We are Indian citizen (me and my spouse). We are going to travel on December 2015 from SFO(San Francisco) to CCU(Kolkata,India) and we will be having 23 hours lay over. We are planning to stay at  hotel.Do I need to apply a separate visa to stay overnight while travelling from one international destination to other.Kindly let us know.
