About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Can i use 72 hour visa-free transit in this case?

I plan to fly to Taiwan first, then Shanghai, stay in shanghai less than 72 hours, then fly back to the US. I will buy a ticket for all flights in advance.
(the difference here from the other examples is that the 3rd place is my destination before China, not after)
