About:China Visa Application in USA

I have to travel to Shanghai and then to Hong Kong. I have a single entry visa.

can I fly back to Shanghai just to fly out and will not leave the airport. Is that considered another entry?

Mitchell, don't worry, you can make use of tehe 72-hour free transit policy on your way back. The transit permit is not required for the layover.
