Visa after overstaying

I overstayed by 8 days, got a letter from the entry and exit bureau (they let me off without a fine!), but now I'm in Hong Kong to renew my visa, I was advised to apply for a business type, but it was rejected. I only need to stay for another month, would I have better luck applying for a different type?

Gary, it's hard to say. The tourist L type is easier to get, but with the L type, you can only take part in sightseeing activities.

Thanks James, I tried applying for the tourist type today, but it was denied because the only invitation letter I had stated I would be working at the school. Do you think I could get an L type if I wrote myself an invitation letter to stay with myself? I'm not sure if it would be granted as I've obviously been living in China for a year.

Gary, franky speaking, if you want to work in China, you have to get a Z type. BTW, to apply for the L type, you can't write yourself the invitation letter. It must be issued from someone who is now in mainland China.
