can i change from a z type to an r type without leaving china?

My Z visa expires at the end of June.  I would like to apply for the R1 type.  Is it possible to do this without leaving China?  Do I need a sponsor like I did for my Z type? Thanks for your help.Sincerely, Robert

Robert, it's possible to change the Z type into an R type within mainland. However, you should be clear that if you want to get the R type, you have to get the approval of relevant authorities and governments. The sponsor is not required generally.
