72 hr permit

Can I Fly to Shanghai then cruise to Japan same day then Fly out same day arrive back from cruise

Alexander, I think you can make use of the 24-hour direct transit policy on both ways to Japan and back to Australia. The 72h free transit service is unavailable because you do not fly in and fly out.
