What is the best city in China to take a train to Vietnam?

i want to go to Vietnam next month, and I think it would be an adventure to travel by rail. Any suggestions or warnings?

Nanning is the only city to Hanoi, you need to get the paper ticket and your Vietnam Visa in advance.

There is only K8701, from Nanning to Hanoi. You could book the tickets in advance.
