About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

flying from Canada to Guilin via Hong Kong

If I fly from Vancouver to Hong Kong, and connect to Guilin and stay less than 72 hours before flying to Malaysia, do I qualify for the visa-free 72-hour stay? What worries me is if Hong Kong is considered the first stop in China or not.
Thanks,
Jeffrey

Hello Jeffrey! When it comes to the immigration affairs, Hong Kong is not regarded as a part of mainland China. So your first stop is Guilin instead of HK. Therefore, your route qualifies for the free stay policy.

Hi Paul,

That's good news. Thanks a lot for your answer!

By the way, rumour has it that China may extend the period to 96 hours. This would make much sense. For example, in my case with Guilin: arrive on day 1 late afternoon, so day 1 is a write-off; day 2 see the city; day 3 see Yangshuo; day 4 my flight is in the morning.
Thus, you actually have really only TWO full days to enjoy your stay, which is short.

Jeffrey
