Hello, I want to apply for a tourist visa but as I do not know how long I will be travelling around China. (Because I may go to Hong Kong). Thanks!

Anna, if you can't provide an invitation letter, the round-trip tickets and accommodation arrangements are required for the application. I think it's not easy to get a multiple-entry type permit if you are visiting for the first time. Maybe you can book the tickets to Hong Kong as well, and apply for a double entry.
