18 months valid passport to renew my chinese temporary resident visa?

I was told by my foreign friend that i will need to have 18 months valid passport to renew my chinese temporary resident permit. Is this TRUE or something new? or was my friend just yanking my chain?

Brandon, I didn't hear this. The truth is that the shorter validity of your passport is, the shorter duration of stay you will be given. Anyway, you need to visit the entry and exit management bureau to learn about detailed requirements. The bureau can tell what documents you need to provide and how longer your passport should be valid.
