About:China Business Visa

I have a friend from the U.S. who would like to come visit me here in China.

I have a friend who would like to come stay with me for as long as possible. Is that possible? If so, what type of visa should they apply for, for an extended stay?

Yes, he can apply for the L type, which normally allows him to stay for one month or two month. After the L type expires, he can extend it in China. The extended stay shall not be longer than the initial stay that the L type grants.
