Do I have to apply for a visa at the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo?

I am Austrian living in Japan (permanent resident).

Yes, you have to apply one for entering mainland China at the Chinese consulate or embassy in accordance with your residence district. Prepare the following documents: a valid passport and a photocopy of the data page, a filled application form, a color photo taken within six months, the original and photocopy of your residence card, and roundtrip tickets and hotel reservations.
