Travel from Shekou to Hong Kong

Hi,

My wife and I live in Shekou, China. Can someone please confirm that it is possible to travel by metro from Shekou to Hong Kong ? It seems we an can travel from Sea World all the way to the border and then walk to the Hong Kong metro and travel on to Hong Kong.
Is this correct ?
Is it better to use the ferry from Shekou to Hong Kong Island ( cost = 120 RMB one way) ?
Any drawbacks ?
Cost / time ?
Can we buy an Octopus card in Shekou that will work both in Shenzhen and Hong Kong ?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Yes, it is possible to travel by metro to Hong Kong. There are trains from Sea World station, but you need to change trains at Civic Centre station. Then, board the train to Futian checkpoint station. You can then go through immigration to Lok Ma Chau station in Hong Kong. The station allows you to exit at the Kowloon side in about 45 minutes. The train journey takes about 1.5 hours in total, and costs around 50 RMB. As you mentioned, there is a ferry service that's faster, but it is more expensive and less reliable in my experience. The trains are almost never delayed, but immigration can take a while depending on what date it is (eg holidays, weekends). I don't believe you can buy Octopus cards in Shekou, but you should be able to get one at Lok Ma Chau station. So overall I would recommend the train for its reliability and convenience, but the crowds can be overwhelming at times.

Glad to help.
