About:China Visa Exemption

2 stop overs in china, do I need a visa?

I'm travelling through China on my way to canada. I have two stop overs Shanghai and beijing total amount of time I will in China is less then 24hrs. On my way back to australia I stop in Shanghai (5hrs) and Nanjing(21hrs). Total 26hrs.

It depends. On your way to Canada, the stoppover length is less than 24 hrs, so you can enjoy the 24-hour free transit. However, when you go back to Australia, neither rules for 24-hour nor 72-hour free transit are applicable to you. Therefore, you should apply a G type in advance.
