About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Over 240 hours but I think it’s ok?

Flight arrives in Chengdu from Istanbul on 12/20 at 5:20 am. My flight to New York will leave Shanghai at 1:35 pm on 12/30. Will this fall within the 240 transit period? Thanks in advance!

Yes, you have counted well and you are definitely and undoubtedly within the 240 hour visa free transit rules. The fact is that the day of arrival is not counted against your 10 (240 hours) available days or in other words, the arrival day is counted as day 0 and not day 1 of your stay. Your day 1 will be 12/21 and your day 10 day will be 12/30 until 23:59 (11:59pm). You should just take care to have your exit ticket, Shanghai to US, at hand as a printout or at least as screenshot on your smartphone because you will be asked to present it in both Istanbul at the time of your check-in and in Chengdu upon your landing.
