About:Hong Kong Visa Policy

Australian tourist visiting Hong Kong for a week. Do I need visa for day trips into mainland China?

You need to apply for a single entry Tourist L to visit China mainland.

Do you mean you visit mainland China frequently when you are in HK? If so, you need to apply for a multiple L type in advance. One single entry just allows you to enter mainland China once.
