Overstay in Shanghai Airport

Hi I just got into Shanghai from Mauritius. The flight got in Sept 19 at 14:20pm. I fly to the US on Sept 22 at 15:45pm. This is 73 hours and 25 minutes. Will I still be able to leave the country? Why was I told all is ok with my transit? Also, if I am denied to get onto the flight what punishment will I face?

Based on my information, the 72 hours are counted from the time you get the permit. So you can leave the airport an hour later after landing. If possible, you can still consult the immigration in the Shanghai airport for confirming.

It is unclear about the punishment for denying to board, because few passengers do it.

I immediately called the Shanghai immigration phone number that is online and explained my dates and situation. They said it's just like Guanzhou - the 72 hours starts from midnight the next day. I don't know if that is for all cities now, but confirmed for Shangai.
