Can someone tell me if i've offended the groom parent for returning the whole sum of bride price?

Lalu, why did you return the whole sum of bride price to the groom? If you explain to the groom and his parents and give them a good reason, I think they won't feel offended. I am a Chinese guy who was married three years ago. My parents did follow the tradition to give bride price to my GF. On the wedding day, my wife's brother brought a red luggage box. I gave some red envelopes to him in order to get the key. It's our tradition. At the night, we opened the box and found that the bride price was put inside. Next morning, my parents-in-law called my dad and explained why he returned the bride price. He said that we needed money to buy an apartment so that he didn't take the bride price.0
