About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a visa if I travel from USA to Tokyo and have a 2-hour lay over in a Chinese city?

I am flying from USA to Tokyo and there is a 2 hour layover in that city before connecting to Shanghai. I will stay for 2 nights. Then I will fly back to Tokyo and spend a week there before returning to USA. Do I need one?

For the "2 hour layover in that city", would you mind make it clear for me that where do you stay before you fly to Shanghai? Or you just fly to Shanghai for two nights and then to Tokyo?

If so, you mean you want will fly USA - Tokyo (layover) - Shanghai (two nights) - Tokyo? If so, you may not be able to enjoy the 72-hour policy. You are suggested to apply for a transit G type to visit Shanghai.
