Visa application by post in UK

I'm travelling on the 29/09/2014 to china for 2 weeks(just a regular tourist holiday); I haven't yet applied for a visa. I don't live close to an office so will have to apply by post, can you advise me how long the whole process will take?
Also what kind of evidence will I need, I know my passport but what for prof of flights and hotel? My friend is booking the hotel who lives there as a gift.
Thanks

Would you mind tell me which place do you live in UK?

In UK, you need to apply through the nearby CVASC. Some of them provide the post service, while some do not. So I need to know your living place and then I can tell you the nearest CVASC to you and whether they provide such service.

Usually, the post service takes around 10 working days. For applying, you need to hand in your valid passport, application form with recent taken photo, round trip tickets to China and hotel booking in China. If you have a Chinese friend, you can also ask him/her to provide you an invitation letter, so that the hotel booking confirmation and round trip tickets are not needed.
