About:China Visa Application in USA

Do I have to specify an entry for the visa or can it be valid when I enter?

I am studying abroad in Hong Kong by the middle of August. I have every intention of going to China, however I am not sure of the exact dates.

Usually, a single entry type has valid of 3 monthes and you can enter China before it expires.

Since you will study in HK, you can try to apply your tourist one after your plan is well when you are in HK.
