Does one need a valid visa to leave China?

Hello, My daughter is in China as a student for a year, her X type will be expired on 31 July. Her flight back home in Belgium is booked on 20 August. She wants to visit other places in China before she leaves. Chinese embassy refused to grant her extension for another month. My questions is does she needs a valid one to leave China?

Your daughter should leave China before July 31 if her extension request was refused. Otherwise, she would have overstayed. Another solution is that she may try to apply for a L type from the local Entry and Exit Management Bureau though the chance is very little.
