About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Flying Hong Kong to Shanghai return within 72 hours. Do I need a visa for Shanghai stay?

I will be flying directly to Hong Kong from London on a British passport. I want to go onto Shanghai within a couple of days and stay in the city for less than 72 hours. Then I plan to fly back to Hong Kong and onto Sydney. thanks Sarah

Sorry, 72 hours free transit isn't ok for you because the place of departure and your destination is the same. You should apply for a L type in UK before you fly to HK.
