Extending a double entries L visa

Hi,
I currently have a double entries L and I'm currently on my first entry. I would like to extend my stay befpre this first entry expires. Is it possible to do so while keeping the second entry to be used after?

(I fear that doing the extension will cancel my current L and the second entry which I haven't used yet.)

Hi, you are advised to exit and reenter China to activate the second entry, and apply for extension later before the second entry expires.

Is the "exit and re-enter China" means I have to do a border run? Can I activate my second entry visa without leaving China?

Yes, it means that you have to do a border run. You need to exit China first if you want to activate the second entry.
