About:China Visa Renewal and Extension

Extending the tourist visa by going the HK

I get a month L, my agency told me I must go the HK and then back the China at the end of my first month in order the extend it, is that true ?

I think they mean to extend it first then visit HK and back to activate the next duration of stay.
