Instead of plane is it possible to travel by train to Lhasa?

If it is possible where do I get the train? Beijing, Shanghai, or any other city?

Yes. Travel to Lhasa by train is another good choice and become more and more popular. You can get the train from Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Lanzhou, Xining, Chongqing and Chengdu.
