Can australia passport holder visit shanghai as a day trip without visa?

Sorry, I am afraid you can't. If you transit in Shanghai and have onward air ticket for your destination in the third country, you can apply for the 72 hours free transit and enjoy a one-day trip in Shanghai. Otherwise, you have to apply for a L type in advance before you go there.
