Will a valid Chinese visa in old US passport still work after I apply for a new passport?

My son's US passport will expire on Jan 16, 2013. He has a Resident Permit for Foreigner in PRC expiring on Jan 20, 2014. I want to apply for a new US passport for him and we will travel back to China on Aug 29, 2013. When I check the US Embassy website, it says it will be OK for us to travel wilh a new US passport and valid one in the old US passport. I just want to double check with you to see if it will be OK for us to travel. I will renewal the Resident Permit when we arrive there.
