Visit China after flying into Hong Kong in December 2013

I am planning to fly to Hong Kong in December visit a day or two and from there travel into mainland and hit some tourist spots there for the duration of my stay which is around 8 more days. I would like to apply in September because I need my passport back for travel November 1. Is September to early to apply for it?

A single entry Chinese visa is valid for 3 months only after issue date. And the best time for application is one month prior to the departure date. The processing takes 4 working days only, so you can apply in mid October.
