If we need to change tickets do we need to go to the stations we are leaving from?

We bought tickets for Beijing, leaving from Shanghai Hongqiao Station. We need to change our tickets and I was told we need to go to the station to do that. Do I need to go to Hongqiao or any station in Shanghai is ok (like Shanghai Huoche zhan 上海火车站)
