can I apply 72 transit permit: trip from USA to Beijing to Taiwan and back to USA

Hello,
I’m from US and will visit Taiwan for a month this summer. I booked my flight from US to Beijing and a flight from Beijing to Taiwan in less than 72 hours. The tickets to Beijing and from Beijing to Taiwan were bought separately to save cost. Do I require a Chinese Visa for my trip?
