Hi Michael, I think it's a really good idea to print subway maps out (I just google-imaged them) before you come, but all of the subway machines in BJ and SH all have an English option. It's really easy - you select the line you're at where you are buying the ticket, then the station you're departing from, then you select the destination line and destination station, and then you pay! I honestly wouldn't even bother getting a smart card unless you know how to ask for one - it's just as easy going to the machine and getting a ticket each time you want to travel. But don't do what I did and buy several in advance thinking that they will do for tomorrow... they are ONLY valid for the day of purchase.
