As a snake, this made perfect sense to me. Malevolence, we anger easy and are not afraid to let you see just how much. Cattiness and mystery are personality traits: the way we speak, the way we interact. BUT... while being catty, we have your best interest at heart, always wanting to do for and benefit others. Very similar to an over protective mother. We (or I at least) put "making progress" ahead of "seeming nice to others". To a snake, appearances are worthless, it's all about the intention and the results.

Most cultures and religions perceive the snake as a symbol of wisdom and mystery. Even the medical profession depicts the snake in a benign manner with the Caduceus and the Rod of Asclepius. With all symbols, there are good and bad associations depending on your perception of things.....look at what happened to the Swastika symbol. Originally, that particular symbol was associated with Hinduism and Buddhism as a sign of good fortune. However since WWII, the Swastika is commonly held as a hate-filled symbol used by Adolph Hitler's Nazi reign. Assumptions breed stereotypes, which in turn encourages prejudice. Yours truly, a snake.

I'm not exactly sure if those things really pertain to each other. But snakes are supposedly masters of being coy and secretive about their true feelings. I think it means to implicate their levels of extreme behaviors on either side.

The excerp where 'malevolence, cattiness and mystery' appeared, I believe the author is describing the Snake and its creature symbolism in the world of natures belief's, novels and movies (except for 'The Nevering Story' Movie, Run Sebastian!!!).
The excerp where strength, compassion and sympathy is describing the common characters of the people who are born in the year of the snake. Oh, I might add, the author forgottened about mysteriously good looks, flamboyant, and enticingly charming hence there's always a references to relationships, affairs and all the stuff that challenges our heart and concious :)
