extending layover in shanghai

Im a canadian and my return flight goes from bangkok to shanghai (layover) to canada. I would like to extend my time in shanghai to 2 days. Is this possible without a visa if my flight over to thailand also layed over in shanghai for about 12 hrs (I stayed in hotel in shanghai for the night)? Thank you.

Hi, it is ok for you to do this. From Jan.1 2013, you are allowed visa free transit in Shanghai for 72 hours with onward flight ticket and visa (if required).
