Do we need a Visa to vist Beijing if already on holidays in Hong Kong??

We are travelling to Hong Kong in March 2013 for a 6 day holiday with friends & would like to pop over to Beijing for 3 days to visit friends who live there before returning back to Hong Kong to fly back home to Australia. Do we require a visa to visit Beijing if we are already in Hong Kong on holidays. If so what is the process & cost involved, and how long will it take to get approved??
