Visa to stay a month with a friend, in Beijing? Clarificaition about Visa.

It'll be my first trip ever. I'm new with passports and visas..

I'm B.C, Canadian. I'm planning on surprising a friend (whose also B.C, Canadian), whose teaching for a year in Beijing, and she'll have an apartment by the time of my trip. What are the requirements that I'll need in order to stay with her rather than a Hotel?

I'm curious, I'm planning to stay for a month in Beijing, and most likely staying at her place for the entire visit - do I still need a visa, even if I'm only in Beijing for a month?! And correct me if I'm wrong, the visa that I'll need would be tourist visa (L)? Even though she's not a full resident of Beijing?

I'm unsure about how to apply for a visa.. will she need to help? Can I apply for a Chinese Visa here in B.C?

Sorry for the "repeated" questions that many asked before me.. Would love to know. Thanks.
