You may just apply for a single entry visa to stay there for 30 days, and apply for an extension of the other 15-day duration at the local public security bureau. Then you won't need to exit China after the 30 days.

Do I have to be in a big city for the extension as I will most likely be in the Yunnan Province. Also how much is a 15 day extension and how long does it take to get?

It is not necessary, to extend the L at local PSB in Yunnan is ok. The processing takes 4 working days, so just submit application to the PSB a week before your visa expires. Fee differ in nationality and will be charged according to mutual agreement.
