Hi, after landing at Bao'an Airport, it needs at least 30-40min to clear customs.

Then I suggest you take a taxi to Shekou Port in around 20min. (In general, time is sufficient. so you can also take airport shuttle bus line 10 to Shekou Port in around 50min.)

Upon arrival, you may catch the ferry at 13:30. The ferry at 14:30 can certainly be caught. The journey from Shekou Port to HKIA takes about 30min.

After that, you can catch the flight at HKIA at 18:30. Don't worry!

If I take a taxi from the airport to the ferry approximately how much should I be charged for the ride. Do I clear customs at the airport before I catch the ferry or is customs done at the ferry terminal and I presume the super or first class seats are the better ones to book?

1. Taxi fare from Bao'an Airport to Shekou Port is around CNY80-100.
2. You can clear customs at Shekou Port. As I know, you need finish all the relevant customs clearance at least 30min ahead of the ferry departure.
3. Both the economical seats and first-class seats can be booked. The difference is that the first-class seat is more comfortable.

I remember one thing that you need pay attention to. As I know, not all the airlines can clear customs at Shekou Port. You can get the airlines list on the website:

Hi Nikita. Yes I was aware of the list of airlines perform customs check at Shekou port and mine is one of them that customs can be performed. As I am flying Singapore Airlines and using this method will be a big bonus that I don't have to clear customs in HKIA and hopefully it will be quicker process.

I used the ferry from SZ city in late February 2013 and it was a great alternative to get to HKIA. By going this way did customs at SZ city and the luggage was checked through to Singapore as Singapore Airlines was one of the airlines that used this facility. Would recommend this to anyone as the ferry crossing was 30minutes and checkin/customs was completed smoothly. No customs, in HKIA just walked straight into the airport from the ferry. The only thing you need to be aware of you need cash to buy the ferry tickets as they don't accept credit cards.
