About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US-Hong Kong-Vietnam

I am flying to Vietnam from the US, but with a layover in Hong Kong for a week. Will I be able to go to Shanghai while in Hong Kong on this 72-hour transit visa? My friend is just flying to Hong Kong from the US and then flying back. Will she need a visa to enter Shanghai from Hong Kong?

If you visit Shanghai from Hong Kong then back to Hong Kong again, you need to apply for a Chinese visa in advance. This 72 hour visa free policy applies to direct transit passengers via Shanghai airports only. Your friend needs also to get a visa in advance.
