About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Transit through Beijing - from Canada, to Hong Kong and onwards

Specific question:

If I fly into Peking from Canada, stay less than 72 hours, and then fly to Hong Kong for a 5 day stay before flying onwards to either Seoul, Singapore or Ho Chi Minh City (having all of the onward tickets with me, booked and confirmed) do I qualify for the visa-free 72 hour transit?

The crux of my question is that I am flying out of Peking into the HK SAR... does this count as flying out of China proper and into another country as interpreted by the visa authorities?

Hi Shell, this 72 hour visa free policy is for direct transit only, requires onward ticket of your connecting flight. If your flight fly from Canada to Hong Kong via Beijing, then it is ok. Otherwise, you have to apply for a visa in advance in Canada.

Thanks for your response. Just to clarify, I will have an onward ticket for a flight out of Peking withing 72 hours (to Hong Kong). However, this will be a different leg of the trip. So it may not technically be seen as a connecting flight, as it may be with another airline. So, for example, I may fly Air Canada from Toronto to Beijing, and have a ticket on another airline booked to Hong Kong within 72 hours from when I arrive in Beijing. I will then visit several other countries in SE Asia before returning to Toronto. As far as I can tell I am technically in transit. Could you possibly elaborate on what you mean by "direct transit", and, if you know, what would be considered a "connecting flight" in these terms, as opposed to a flight into and then out of Peking in a 72 hour timeframe, and if there is a difference between the two.
