The valid visa on your old passport is ok for use to enter China. So, just bring both the old and new passport when travel.

After verifying further with the chinese embassy in Italy they confirmed that the visa is obsolete. A new visa must be requested.

Dear sir, may I know if the number or name on your new passport differs from that of your old passport? According to the regulation and the former experience, above reply what Ella said is right.

That is the problem, if any change involved for passport renewal, you need to apply for a new visa.

What number is different. Usually when you renew a passport the number is different. Does that mean that one has to apply for a new visa although it is still valid.
