About:China Visa
If I apply for a L visa can I still apply for a Z visa when I return to Australia?

You can only hold one visa at the same time. Your L visa expires once you got the Z visa.0

as was answered, you can have only one visa at same time. if you leave country your visa is cancelled (if not multiple entry) and you need to obtain new one. while staying in China it's possible to change your L visa into Z visa without leaving country0
