Extending an F Visa

I am currently in Shanghai and need to extend my F visa for one month as my current visa is valid until the first days of september is this possible? I've been told that this is not possible as the max stay is 180 days and so I have to come back home when my visa expires. They also told me that changing from an F to L visa for one month is not possible unless I go to HK to apply for it. Is that true?
Thank you!!

How long have you been in China? Have you apply for any extension yet?

I'm here since march 7th and my Visa expires september 3rd, so 180 days. Did not apply to the estension yet but a chinese friend told me that the only solution is go to HK and get an L visa, because an extension of the F Visa is not possible .
